Says Vixter: "This is a fairly easy design, the origin of which is lost in the mists of time. There are many similar styles so I don’t claim the “design” as my own, I just know that this is the pattern that Nanny (my late maternal grandmother) gave to me*, hand-written on the back of an old envelope over 45 years ago. We used to use carpet wool, which was err, umm "robust" to say the least! Choose a pure wool or wool-blend yarn for warmth and strength - your toesies will love you for it.
Nanny had a hard life, brought up in poverty, going into "service," surviving WWII and some serious domestic violence, bringing up five children including as a single mother in the 1950s and '60s. But she still had enough love and time to teach me to knit and crochet (before I was even old enough to go to school) and encourage me to be creative. Thank you Nanny.
*I have taken the liberty of changing measurements and needle sizes from imperial to metric. I've also added a few more instructions than Nanny gave me, there wasn't much space on the back of that envelope!"
You will also need: 100g DK yarn - the sample pair used Stylecraft Life DK, 50g each of Cognac and Pillar Box Red, a pair of 4.5mm needles and a pompom maker is a huge help when it comes to that bit!
Size: To fit adult foot approximately between sizes 5-8, easily adaptable to fit a shorter or longer foot.
We can post out a printed copy of the pattern as a small letter or if you'd like it quicker, click "free local delivery" and in the notes request that we e-mail a copy to you instead :-)
You will see that Vixter makes a donation to Age Concern UK for each pattern sold.
